Reasonable fishing conditions produced only kelts on the Helmsdale last week. Temperatures were good, no frost, and water levels varied between 10ins and 2.5ft on Saturday. I had an afternoon on the Kilphedir pool on Saturday courtesy of Achentoul estate rods who have once again kindly donated one weeks fishing to the Helmsdale Angling Club. Kilphedir was as perfect as you could get for spring fishing and my favourite Tungsten Monkey fly was deployed. This tantalising tube with it's 6" wing never fails to hook something! and on this day it did not disappoint. 6 kelts and a hefty kelt sea-trout were safely returned.

I will be on the Dee (Lower Crathes, West Durris) from the 14th Feb again for 1 week so go easy on the orders that week please!!! The Black & Yellow Tungsten Monkey will be my first choice fished on either a Mackenzie Multi-tip line or a Carron Jetstream full sink. I will also be trying out the new Triple D Shooting heads from Guideline on a few tight Lower Crathes spots (Bridge pool right bank)!

Hopefully all the Helmsdale rods will be out in force this week and a fish or two will result. Don't forget the offers below on rods and flies are all still running!!

No more spring fish have been caught on the Helmsdale to date after a promising start. Conditions are good but as usual, not many rods are on the water at this time, I am sure there are more fish there! The rivers Dee, Tweed and Brora will open on Tuesday Feb 1st so the season is well and truly getting under way, if conditions remain kind these rivers should produce some action on opening day, especially the Dee.

We have a special offer running for February along side Scott Mackenzie DTX rods. Every rod will be sold with a free DTX or Carron jetstream line to match. These rods with matching lines are an absolute dream to cast with. I personally use the 15ft DTX with a DTX Multi-tip or Carron full sinking line for Feb/March fishing and this is an almost unbeatable combo for balance power and lightness. Scott has new shooting head lines on the way for the end of March and these will once again take casting to a whole new level of ease. If you have not tried to cast with shooting heads, then the time is now! covering vast areas of water is so easy now.

The opening 3 free fishing days on the river Helmsdale were very well attended once again with over 200 anglers grabbing the opportunity to fish prime spring fly water. Many kelts were caught and a handful of baggots & rawners made anglers miss a heartbeat or two but another fresh runner remained elusive after the capture of the first fish on the 11^th. 

The profile of the event was heightened this year with the visit of Orri Vigfussun, head of the NASF and Scott Mackenzie. Scottish Television, Eric Steel and Mike Shepley with Media Forth productions were also all armed to cover the excitement on the day. The traditional first cast was launched by local angler Sonny Jappy after a fine display of dancing and piping by the Sutherland school pipe band and local country dancers managed by Angela Macbeath Brora. Sir Michael Wigan offered a warm welcome to the large gathering and mentioned how lucky we were to have so many VIPs in attendance this year.

Orri Vigfusson was flown in by US film Director Eric Steel who is working on a film documentary about legendary local fly tier Megan Boyd. This is sure to be a fantastic story of her life and work and the film will hopefully be launched at the end of the year.

Orri was a great friend of the late Megan Boyd who loyally supported his organisation. The plight of the Atlantic salmon is always centre stage when Orri is around and it took him no time to warn the Scottish Government that their current policy towards saving wild salmon was seriously flawed. The NASF have worked tirelessly over the years with the Greenlanders, Faroese and Icelanders in an effort to eradicate the netting of salmon on their feeding grounds and therefore offer free passage back to Scotland for thousands of these priceless fish. Incredibly the “powers that be” in Scotland are completely wasting all of these efforts by remarkably still allowing large mixed stock netting stations to ambush salmon all around the coast of Scotland . This ludicrous and unsustainable stance is decimating wild salmon stocks on their return to UK rivers. 

 I have to say that I agree 100% with Orri and every salmon angler in the country needs to support the NASF and lobby ministers to change policy before it is too late for the salmon. The Faroese, who have offered most netting concessions over the years, are horrified by the sheer arrogance of the Scottish Government towards protecting the wild salmon that they have spared. If this barbaric situation is not rectified soon by the Scots then the Faroese will once again decide to net salmon on North Atlantic feeding grounds, this would be disastrous for the Scottish economy and herald the end for almost all salmon returning to the UK. 

On a brighter note – The Kilphedir pool was the place to be on opening day. A steady procession of anglers called in to try out the superb range of new DTX rods and lines designed by Scott Mackenzie. Scott was on hand all day offering key instruction and advice on every aspect of fly casting and fishing tactics. Everyone who attended whether experienced or novice picked up some great tips and commented on the lightness and power and of these rods.

The day was rounded off with a presentation to gamekeeper Richard Bain who landed the first Scottish fly caught salmon of the season. Richard hooked the fine fresh run 8lbs salmon in the Park pool on beat 2 fishing for Torrish rods. He was using a Morangie copper tube fly. Richard was presented with the coveted Bridge Hotel trophy, a bottle of fine Clynelish and a 15ft DTX salmon rod for generously releasing the first fish.

The Helmsdale Tackle shop would like to thank all involved in making the opening day such a success especially our sponsors Clynelish and Scott Mackenzie, it was also nice to see so many visiting anglers staying in village accommodation. This popular annual free fishing event is a major boost for Helmsdale at an otherwise quiet time in the tourist season and thanks must be given to the Helmsdale River Board for opening the river beats to the public.

Torrish estate gamekeeper Richard Bain proudly shows off his opening day fish from the Park pool on beat 2. Richard knows the river well and beat 2 is just below his house, it was fine and handy that the Torrish rods were drawn for beat 2 on the day! The fresh run salmon weighed 8lbs and was returned quickly to win a superb Scott Mackenzie DTX salmon rod and the Bridge Hotel Trophy. Conservation of spring salmon is high on the agenda on the Helmsdale River  and Richard has been duly rewarded for his fine conservation gesture. When Scott Mackenzie was asked if he would donate a prize for the return of the first fish, he had no hesitation in donating one of his new top of the range salmon rods for the cause. Scott will be holding a demo and instruction day on the Kilphedir pool (beat 2) on the official opening day of Thursday 13th. This is a super chance to try out the latest awesome rod technology and watch the three times World Spey casting champion in full flow, many thanks to Scott for generously donating a rod and offering free instruction for the day. I will also be there offering free instruction and dishing out a few drams from our famous local Clynelish distillery - an event not to be missed!

The killer fly was a 2" Morangie copper tube selected from the Helmsdale tackle shop only the day before. The Morangie fly was designed by former opening day first fish captor Andy Sutherland who ghillied for the same estate for many years. The Helmsdale season closed with another excellent spell of fishing, the highlight being more fish off the loch for Badanloch rods. Badanloch have caught 11 salmon on the loch recently - just goes to show if you fish there you can have good success and they are the only rods to score on the loch this season! The grand total for the river should have no trouble reaching the 2,700 mark with the inclusion of around 130 from the Association water. I had my traditional late last cast on the 30th in the Flat pool for no joy but I was amused when a family of 4 otters muddled right up the middle of the pool past me as if to say " ok, we are taking over here now - its time for you to go". A lovely end to a great season.
