The Helmsdale river roared back into form this week and the scoring was topped by a magnificent record breaking fish of 27lbs for local angler Alistair Jappy. Water levels have been excellent once again and on Saturday evening the upper Allan pool was looking good when Alistair arrived on the ebb of the high tide. His favourite Alistair fly (3/4" copper tube) was promptly chosen for the slightly peat stained water and 30 minutes later the biggest fish caught on the Association water in recent memory was grassed.

The private beats also produced many hefty fish in a week where the score probably reached an encouraging 50 off. The biggest came from the rod of David Rand fishing Achentoul rods at 23lbs, the Upper Carew on beat 2 below was the hot spot and it was caught on a willie Gunn Conehead. Achentoul caught 5 that day on beat 2 just before the river started to rise and spoil things. Martin Grant had a 22 pounder on Kildonan rods and other estates reported fish of 20, 18 & 17lbs.

Association water day tickets are available for only £25 per rod per day - 16yrs and under and 70yrs and over are half price. I think you will agree it is well worth a cast! Call Ron at the Helmsdale Company (01431821372) for all the details and tactics required for a successful day and don't forget to stock up on those deadly Alistair tubes and many more right here - Coneheads were also fishing great last week.

Salmon catches in general eased off last week in the North as water levels fell away and temperatures dropped dramatically. Achentoul rods got off to a flyer on Monday beat 6 on the Helmsdale with 5 fish but unfortunately that was the last scoring day for them. Overall catches were reported at around the 20 mark so you had to work hard for your fish. Anglers were seeing very few fish for the time of the year, I guess we have been spoiled by the greatness of May 2011! Incedentally we have new flies in stock on our homepage, check some of them out here  http://www.helmsdalecompany.com/index.php tiny Crimp coneheads, Classic Alistairs, Posh Willie Gunns!

On the local front, Alistair Jappy dropped in from Sea and quickly added to his tally with a fine 12 pounder from the Sewerage pool (amidst heavy snow showers) one of our deadly Willie Gunn Temple Dogs did the trick tied on a 0.5" copper tube. The weather forecast is for heavy rain early next week so lets hope that there are many more fish waiting for it.

The Helmsdale River Board meeting takes place this week and many will be awaiting the outcome of pressure to tighten up the Helmsdale river spring conservation policy. Spring salmon are declining everywhere especially in Jan, Feb, March and now April it would seem and the current policy which allows you to kill the first one you catch is not acceptable or sustainable. It results in almost 100% catch & Kill for the first 3 months of the season. The whole local economy from ghillies to B & Bs need salmon in the river especially early in the season. Something must be done to help save the future of these priceless fish. With all that is currently against the survival of salmon stocks in general - mortality at sea, strict seal protection, increasing numbers of costal netting stations, sea-lice infestation to name a few. It would seem that we are potentially the last chance they have.

We have a few more cracking fly offers for you (see pics below) - Frances flies tied on Loop doubles will especially appeal to anglers heading abroad to fish in the summer. Loop doubles are very strong and have landed many huge salmon in Russia/Norway etc, they are a great favourite at big fish destinations as are the Frances flies reduced from £34.90 to only £19.90 - BUY NOW CLICK LINK http://www.helmsdalecompany.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=1223 We also have Black Boar Shrimp flies on offer - these flies are a more modern version of the legendary Ally's Shrimp fly. Boar bristles in the tail of a fly seem deadly for Summer salmon - you can have a deadly selection for only £16.50 reduced from £30 - BUY NOW CLICK LINK http://www.helmsdalecompany.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=1224

We have also taken delivery of a superb new salmon film from Sasha Savic - A Passion Called Salmon. This movie is a "must have" for keen salmon anglers with superb big fish action from famous rivers around the world including the Alta, Yokanga and Grand Cascapedia etc. it also adresses the very serious topic of salmon decline. I have watched it and recommend it highly - BUY NOW CLICK LINK http://www.helmsdalecompany.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=1211

April

Spring is in the air.

Ronald Sutherland

A long dour spring has finally given way to some action in the North and many who have failed to contact a springer this season have finally hooked up, including myself! but I had to book a week on the Brora river to land 2.

Cracking water on the Upper Cliff pool Brora South bank

Upper Clipp pool river Brora

Water levels were excellent all week on the Helmsdale but overhead conditions have not been so kind with a stiff raw North Easterly reminding us we are still in April. Barring a rising river on Friday, the river did not go below a foot on the marker so the scene was set for some seasonal sport maybe! The action eventually did arrive but for a lucky few. It was a case of being on the right beat at the right time and beat 6 was the place to be as fish held back from the falls of Kildonan with high water and cool temperatures. Suisgill rods provided the first clue that there were a few more fish starting to enter the system by recording 4 midweek from beat 6. Enter Graham Robertson and Ross Mackay fishing Kildonan rods next day and they would surpass the previous days score with a super 6. Swirl, Little Rock 2, Vale of Tears 2 and the Falls made for a memorable day. Ross & Graham (both from Caithness) have fished the rotation in spring for a few years now and they were due a great day - the fish were there and these guys were well equipped to sniff them out and keep ghillies Martin and Gordon on the hop! Kildonan totalled 8 for the week. Some other rods were lucky, some were not. Count for the week was probably between 25 & 30.

First Brora fish in the net on an Alistair Tiger Tail tube.

Brora Beech Tree fish

The Brora had some high scoring on the upper river and proved that fish were clearly running hard and keeping their noses down. The North bank recorded 4 with 2 to John Mackay, Bill Baxter and Corrie Cormack had one each. Yours truly had 2 and Brother Andy 1 on the South bank. I don't think anybody saw a fish moving all week - 14 sea-liced fish were taken from the upper river on one day whilst the lower river struggled badly, the cool temps were good but high water obviously does not suit the lower Brora! The Oykel reported 24 fish in 4 days so it would seem a run of sorts has arrived.

Keep an eye out for some super fly offers in the weeks ahead as we move around some old and new stock. Listening to all the reports this week it would seem that most fish were taken on floating lines and sink tips with a wide range of flies from doubles to quite large Monkey tubes. The week ahead looks to offer better weather than last so smaller coneheads and size 8/9 doubles should fish well as rivers fine down to excellent levels. The Helmsdale Association water will be a very good bet for sport this week and at only £25 per rod per day you would do well to have a go! Local Robert Mackay had his first of the season midweek at 13lbs. Tickets are available from the tackle shop along with all the flies and tips required for a successful day out.

Tight lines.

New Movie and latest report

Ronald Sutherland

?

last week provided around 15 fish for the rotation. Rain on Monday night generated the first real spate of the season but this was not enough to tempt in too many fish. Alistair Jappy had an early fish in the Association water on Monday and this was followed by an unseasonable 2lbs grilse to the rod of Mick Butterly. High water spoiled things on Tuesday and the rest is history! It is very evident that few fish are on the coast and we are experiencing a very quiet April.

Check out out latest short action movie below - some great salmon & sea-trout action on our flies. With special thanks to Damian McColgan for puting it together AND catching lots of huge fish!

Dee Mc Colgan , Ron Sutherland & Pablo Hevia showcasing flies from The Helmsdale Company with special guests the MacKenzie DTX crew.

The fly BOGOF is now closed - many thanks to all who took the opportunity to stock up.

We have our traditional fly BOGOF ( buy one get one free) in operation this week starting right now....this has caused some slight confusion in the past but in order for you to get what you want please note that whatever flies you order - this quantity will simply be doubled up. Happy hunting - a fab chance to stock up on a few flies! take advantage while stocks last or you may be unlucky.

The fishing is still on the quiet side here right now, I have an estimated 13 fish off for the week which won't go down in history as being one of the most memorable April weeks! this week last year produced around 30. The river has generally been in good order holding at around 9/10" but there are few fish entering the system it would seem, yet!

Fishing Badanloch rods, Adam Macdonald got the ball rolling Monday with a super 15 pounder from beat 4 above on a Temple Dog tube, the same party had to wait until late on Friday to meet another taker and it was Callum Gillies who landed his first Helmsdale fish from the Dyke pool beat 6. Adam then followed with another sea-licer from the fall pool. Encouraging numbers of fish were seen on the day.

Achentoul rods also had 2 from beat 6 and 1 out of the tail of the Shepherds beat 5 for ghillie George Hardy. Tara Parker saved the blank on Torrish rods with an 8 pounder and Husband Tom further eased the pressure with a sea-licer from Johnny Gordons beat 2 below. John Young and Roy Bagnall had a couple on Kildonan rods but it was all very hard work!

The Association water should offer a great chance next week if the water and cool temps holds and I think the river in general will fish ok with hopefully upwards of 15 in the book. Time will tell...

We have a great new salmon fishing DVD available, A Passion Called Salmon, 70 minutes of action to keep you engrossed! Buy on-line here now for £24.99. All proceeds from this film will be used for the ongoing efforts to protect and save Atlantic salmon.

More big news is that I can tie you up some of our new Tiger Tail tube flies as my list of orders is now under control. Check out the pic our awesome Flamethrower 3/4" tube below, all tubes are tied in this style...

Good water but few fish!

Ronald Sutherland

On holiday - report to follow ... As far as I know there were 10 fish off last week. Kildonan rods had the best of it catching 2 on beat 6 and 3 on beat 5 the next day. The association water provided 1 fish while the river was still low. We have super water now after heavy snow and rain, unfortunately the river height has been very unsettled leading to very little action. Either there are very few fish around or the unsettled conditions are putting them off! This week will be interesting and should easily produce 20 fish or more.

Another tough week.

Ronald Sutherland

Another tough week on the Helmsdale saw 8 fish reported up until Friday night and I have not heard of anything caught on Saturday yet. Borrobol had a fish from beat 1 below Monday and Achentoul ghillie George Sutherland grassed one from Dempsters Wednesday, Suisgill had 2. On Thursday Borrobol rods struck again with 2 from the One Minute Hole beat 4 and Badanloch rods John Browett had a super day with a 15 pounder from way down the tail of Lower Caen followed by another from the Woody pool on the upper beat. Local expert Alistair Jappy was called in as second ghillie for part of the week on Badanloch rods and put John right onto his sea-liced 15 pounder in a spot that is often overlooked unless the river is high.

The river is still low and running on compensation water at around 5". I have never known springtime to be so dry. Floating lines with coneheads and small copper tubes are doing the damage. The deadly Cascade tungsten Conehead (below) is fishing very well - I would get a few ordered while we still have stocks, they are disappearing fast!

Dont forget we are still in "pricecrash" mode on-line with all spring flies. We also heve the new range of Scott Mackenzie shootine lines available, these lines are outselling all lines right now with the exception of the Carron Jetstream. New technology has made casting so easy now with very slick and well balanced lines on shorter heads. Couple these new lines with very lightweight rods and fishing is an absolute pleasure - it's not all about catching fish...but it is nice when you do with little effort and no aching muscles at the end of the day.

Prospects for the week ahead are slightly better than of late with some rain and cooler temperatures forecast.

12 fish off last week

Ronald Sutherland

25/3/12. Remarkably it would appear that around 12 salmon were caught last wek on the Helmsdale and one of 4lbs pending scale results. A slight lift in the water on Monday was gone by midweek and conditions were back to summer low once again. Visitor Niel Strawson had a day out from the Brora river and caught a sea-liced 7lbs fish from Roaries pool on the Association water on a small Park Shrimp conehead and William Jappy landed a fish of 4lbs with no lice. Due to the small size of this good looking fish, scales have been taken to confirm status. It could well be a 2SW fish or a very early grilse. Suisgill rods took the first fish from above the falls in the Woody pool beat 1 and the week ended on a strong note with 5 fish off on Saturday. The forecast for the week ahead is very settled with a stubborn high pressure in firm charge and no rain in sight. Summer flies will be the order of the day once again with small coneheads, tubes and doubles required on floating lines for the best chance of a fish. We still have a superb set of half price Park Shrimp flies on offer (see below) and all spring flies are still on "Pricecrash" mode to buy right now online.

18/3/12. The total is up to 27 fish after a good start to last week. Suisgill rods had 3 fish from beats 1 & 6, Kildonan took 2 from beat 2, Badanloch (as already mentioned below) had one from Dempsters on beat 4 and Peter Macmillan added what one would call a typical summer sea-liced grilse to the Local tally ( scales to confirm status ) not forgetting Sonny Jappy who had a cracking 10 pounder on Monday. All in all a great start to the week. As the week went on, the water dropped and sport basically came to a halt from Thursday onwards as water levels fell away to around 4ins. With no rain of any consequence on the forecast the prospects look bleak for the week ahead unless compensation water is introduced from Badanloch. Check out our great deal on Park Shrimp flies below for less than half price, snap up a box while stocks last.

In a big new move for the Helmsdale Company portfolio, Ronald Sutherland has now teamed up to consult with the worlds biggest fly manufacturing outfit Fulling Mill. Ronald has agreed to update the Fulling Mill salmon range available to trade dealers/tackle shops worldwide by providing cutting edge new patterns and modernising some old favourites. The new Fulling Mill fly catalogue is due out later in the year and it is set to make a big impact with superb new trout and salmon flies - "this is exciting times for the Helmsdale Company, we have been designing some amazing salmon flies recently with a range of innovative new materials, watch out for the new FM catalogue, the new salmon range will be absolutely stunning" check out the latest Fulling Mill press release here - http://www.fullingmill.com/blog.php?t=Fulling+Mill+team+up+with+Ronald+Sutherland&b=94

Sonny Jappy got off the mark early this season with a super sea-liced 10 pounder from the Sewage pool on the Association water. Sonny was fishing on the afternoon ebb of the tide and a 1.5" copper gold bodied Willie gunn did the damage. Tickets for this water are now available for the reduced price of £25 per rod per day following the worst grilse run in memory, let's hope things get back to normal this summer - OAPs and Under 16s are half price. Tickets are available from the Tackle shop and Strathullie crafts.

Badanloch also reported a sea-liced fish from Dempsters pool beat 4 which brings the seasonal total up to 19.

Sonny 10 pounder

The Killer Gold Bodied Willie Gunn below - now only £1.95

Last week came to a rather surprising and limp end with a blank day on Saturday 10/3/12. The river was still running well at around 8/9" and conditions were mild and overcast but there were no more fish to be found. Generally the river performs much better at this time of the year, infact what we are now catching in March used to be the norm in February. The catches are not too surprising considering the lack of rods fishing 9 miles of water below the falls of Kildonan. Soon the amount of water will more than double for the same quantity of rods and the fish will be even more difficult to find. Interestingly the private rotation works out at 1 rod per 2 miles double bank when the full length of river is populated with salmon. Luxury indeed.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Andy Sutherland landed his second of the season and No 17 off the river today on the Association water 9/3/12. Huge midday tides, 10ins fresh water on the guage, downstream wind, cloud cover and mild, what more could lure you down for a cast, perfect conditions! Andy wasted no time in landing a cracking 12 pounder full of sea-lice from the Upper Allan pool on a Hot orange conehead Monkey tube, (see fish & fly below) a few more fish were spotted running today so prospects are looking good for the beats tomorrow.

Andy's Allan fish

Hot orange conehead Monkey Tube

Hot orange Conehead Monkey

Duncan Mackay Took No 16 from the Kilphedir pool yesterday beat (2) 8/3/12 a fine sea-liced 12 pounder went in the books for Torrish rods. The river has risen to an excellent height of around 10" so we would expect a good run to enter the system after a long low spell of water.

Spring Fly PRICECRASH still on

Bringing you right up to date - Becky Smith landed a superb 16 pounder from the Flat pool beat 6 yesterday 6/3/12. She was fishing Borrobol rods and Glen Macdonald ghillie was on hand to help land the fish. A dangerous place to play a fish, the Flat pool has seen many fish head down the falls for the sea to disaster but not this time! well done to Becky, keeping a hand in for the ladies amongst a very experienced party of lads Wink.

Badanloch Ghillie Alex Fraser landed the first for his estate on beat 6 at the end of last week to take the river total to 14 for the season (6 off last week) Alex's fish weighed in at 14lbs and was caught in the Flat pool.

We desperately need water now as the river is sitting at around 4ins. The local water is a good chance in these conditions so worth maybe having a go at £25 per rod. We have all spring tubes on a price crash right now so a good chance to get stocked up!
