So, on to the opening days of the river. The water has been high but hopefully frosts will drop levels and make it very fishy, The lower beats may be in prime condition for some very hopefull angling. All the usual rules are in place and the Sutherland Schools pipe band will kick off proceedings  from the Belgrave Arms Hotel as per usual. As far as I am aware, tickets will be issued from the Bannockburn, Belgrave Arms & Thyme & Plaice from Sunday 10th onwards. If you want to give yourself the best chance of capturing that highly prized spring salmon then get your flies choice right and on sinking lines or tips. This is the latest news from the Board "The Helmsdale Board is happy to welcome anglers to the Open Days in 2018. The Hatchery fishing programme is well under way now on the Helmsdale and some very big fish are being caught for stripping. No surprise in that considering the form of the past season. Borrobol estate alone has had 11 in the 20 - 24lbs range, 2 at 25lbs and had others of 27,28 & 30lbs. fish in the teens of pounds were also aplenty, check out another recent big fish pic below.

Glen Macdonald Borrobol ghillie with another fish estimated at over 25lbs fishing for the Hatchery.

As another season on the Helmsdale closes out there is much optimism in the air for spring 2018. The final tally will be knocking on for around 1700 fish, not bad for a river so lightly fished. The trend this season has been on a par with other Northern rivers with bigger fish dominating the run and grilse numbers coming a poor second. Remarkably there have been a handful of superb fish of over 30lbs and dozens over 20 during one of the better seasons in recent years. Rods on the river have always been difficult to access, I think it just got harder!

The Brora recorded a cracking fish of 32 lbs recently also, Mr James Stewart-Richardson being the lucky angler, The Lower Fannich pool was the hot spot, North bank, and the fish was 43 x 23.5". I don't think it would be fantasy to believe we could see a 40lbs monster grassed sometime very soon on the Helmsdale or Brora.

Don't forget I am still trying to organise fly tying lessons over the close season on Speyside, the numbers are growing and when there are enough I will negotiate with a Hotel for accom or space to execute the courses. On Speyside the season has had a similar feel with lots of thumping msw salmon reported and a sprinkling of grilse. For keen spring anglers like myself, this is music to the ear and I'm busy tying up, tweaking and designing some new patterns which I have to say are the most stunning new designs I have ever created by far. The season is not exactly over quite yet as many rivers are fishing extensions to the season throughout most of october and others are open until the end of November, the famous Tweed to name the most prominent. The Brora brute at 32lbs

I am planning fly tying lessons in the close season if there is enough interest.

They will consist of 2 - 3 days flytying and discussion on all aspects of "salmon" fly-tying and tactics . Solar Monkey, SuperSnaelda, SuperSquid, Coneheads, etc etc the list of our successful flies and inventions is very long.
The tying course will show you how to master all of them and many more.

If there is enough interest I will be able to approach hotels on Speyside and hopefully arrange a deal on accom for everyone.

There is no limit to the number courses but each one would be limited to 6 people, cost per person still to be worked out.

The Helmsdale provided around 65 fish last week as the unsettled autumn conditions moved in. This week is also proving very unsettled and the river is very high indeed. The upper beats should produce as soon as the river starts dropping. The Helmsdale is easing itself into the final phase of the season, pretty good on the whole so far, but now anglers are getting tested. The last two weeks have been tough going. Fresh fish are still running and you can bump into one anytime but the trend is how best to persuade the residents now. It is always a challenge, good water helps but even this does not guarantee sport nowadays, the days of big killings on the back of big spates are over, probably due to the unpredictability of the weather and warmer autumn temperatures. Word is, the river has over 1000 fish off so far with a full month to go, not bad considering the fish have been hard to catch all summer.

If you are lucky enough to be fishing the Helmsdale, or any other river for that matter you need to start fishing smart and that simply means broadening your tactics a little. Even though it is still mild don't be afraid to fish deep espcially if there is good water levels, Frances tubes and coneheads are as good as it gets, RS Willie Dog coneheads, Red/Gold SuperSnaelda conehead, RS Willie Gunn TDs in copper/tungsten. Take serious note of water clarity, depth and temperature. If the water is clear go for amaller flies, 1/4" frances copper/tungsten tubes, Black Frances, Silver Stoat, Cascade Pot bellied Pig. Bigger water will command the heavier brighter patterns like Framethrower, Cascade Pig Tungsten, Cascade Conehead, Cascade SuperSnaelda, Willie Dog Conehead and Black & orange Monkey. Keep the explosive Sunray Shadow in mind also as they have a habit of getting attacked by the bigger fish as Glen Macdonald Borrobol rods found out yet again last week in the Marrel pool beat 1. He hooked another brute which turned and headed for the Association water at high speed before throwing the hook unfortunately.
