The Helmsdale has swung into action at last ...

 27/2/11

The Helmsdale has swung into action at last and we have suddenly jumped from 1 opening day fish to 11 fish off! The brothers Maclean Jim & George fishing Suisgill rods got the ball rolling with two nice fish on week beginning 14th. Jim had the first (11lbs) from Lower Torrish beat 3 and George returned a fine 14 pounder in Salscraggie beat 1 (pics to follow) and Saturday produced a fine sea-liced fish for Brora Golf Pro Brian Anderson from the Swirl on beat 6.

Last week started well with 2 off beat 5 for the Hugo Ross (wick) team fishing Borrobol rods and another fish came from beat 6 on the same day. The Park pool on beat 2 then stole the show providing another 3 fish during the week. One more fish was returned on beat 6 by Suisgil rods ending a fine week.

George Maclean returning a fine 14 pounder from Salscraggie ( below ) and a cracking 11 pounder from Lower Torrish for brother Jim.

The amazing large 4 leaf flybox is stuffed full with one of each of 300 available flies and would be worth £800 if purchased individually. I will update the bids on our homepage as they come in so look out for that!

Reasonable fishing conditions produced only kelts on the Helmsdale last week. Temperatures were good, no frost, and water levels varied between 10ins and 2.5ft on Saturday. I had an afternoon on the Kilphedir pool on Saturday courtesy of Achentoul estate rods who have once again kindly donated one weeks fishing to the Helmsdale Angling Club. Kilphedir was as perfect as you could get for spring fishing and my favourite Tungsten Monkey fly was deployed. This tantalising tube with it's 6" wing never fails to hook something! and on this day it did not disappoint. 6 kelts and a hefty kelt sea-trout were safely returned.

I will be on the Dee (Lower Crathes, West Durris) from the 14th Feb again for 1 week so go easy on the orders that week please!!! The Black & Yellow Tungsten Monkey will be my first choice fished on either a Mackenzie Multi-tip line or a Carron Jetstream full sink. I will also be trying out the new Triple D Shooting heads from Guideline on a few tight Lower Crathes spots (Bridge pool right bank)!

Hopefully all the Helmsdale rods will be out in force this week and a fish or two will result. Don't forget the offers below on rods and flies are all still running!!
